FAQ

Questions, answered plainly

If yours is not here, ask - the address is on the contact page and a person reads it.

Does GreyStream include any channels?
No. GreyStream is media playback software, and we operate strictly on a Bring Your Own Content (BYOC) model. It comes with no channels, no films and no subscriptions of any kind, and we do not sell, bundle or recommend media sources. You configure your own sources and are responsible for having the right to access them, exactly as you would with any other player.
What source formats does GreyStream read?
M3U and M3U8 playlists, and stream server logins - an address, a username and a password. Both are formats rather than services: GreyStream reads whatever you point it at and supplies none of the content itself. A login-based source can carry up to three server addresses, and GreyStream ranks them by speed and uses the quickest.
Which televisions does it work on?
Samsung sets running Tizen 6.5 or newer, which is broadly models from 2022 onward. It is built for 1920×1080 and scales from there.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email and no password. Your television identifies itself to the sync service, and that is the whole of it.
What does the free radio actually include?
Two things: search across two curated directories, and room for your own stations. You can look up a station by name, or browse and sort by country and genre. Alongside that you can save up to 50 stations of your own and up to 5 radio playlists (M3U lists of stations). The full-screen visualisers, scene backdrops, artwork and lyrics come with it. No expiry, no payment method. GreyStream does not operate these directories and does not provide their content: it searches them and plays what those services publish.
How does the phone setup work?
The television shows a six-digit code and a QR image. Scanning it opens a page in your phone's browser - nothing to install - where you configure your media source and test whether it is reachable. When you save, the television picks the change up within about a second.
Are my source credentials safe?
Yes. Your source credentials are saved so that your television and your phone can both see the same thing - that is what lets you edit on a phone and have the TV pick it up a second later. They are encrypted at rest, and the encryption key is stored separately from the database. We use them for nothing but showing you your own sources, and we never share or sell them. Your viewing stays private too: channels, films and series play straight from your configured source to your television, so we never see what you watch. And if you change your mind, one tap in the companion page erases your sources, stations and credentials. All that is kept is a small marker recording that the television existed and whether a licence was bought - it holds no source details and nothing about what you watched, and it is there so that erasing your data cannot destroy a licence you paid for. Ask us and we will remove that too.
Can I stop children finding adult channels?
GreyStream supplies no channels of any kind - everything you see comes from the source you added. Settings > Display & UI > Parental control hides adult categories from Channels, Films and Series, and it can go further: unlock Allowed groups with the four-digit PIN and choose exactly which groups each section shows. Anything the provider adds later stays hidden until you allow it, and the PIN is needed to change any of it or switch it off. It filters the lists rather than locking the television, so treat it as a sensible default for a family set rather than a security guarantee.
Can I use it on more than one television?
A Premium licence covers one television. Radio is free on as many as you like.
I bought a new television. Can I move my licence?
Yes, and you can do it yourself. Pair the new television with the companion page, then enter the old set's device ID and the code it is showing. Your media sources and radio stations can come across with it, or you can leave them behind if the new set is already set up the way you want. The first move has no waiting period, so setting up on the wrong television an hour after buying costs you nothing; after a move there is a 30 day wait before the next one. If the old television is broken or gone and cannot show you a code, get in touch and we will move it for you.
What happens when the trial ends?
Premium playback stops - live, films and series. Radio keeps working, with everything it had. Nothing is deleted and your configured sources are still there if you buy a licence later.
Will I lose my remaining trial days if I buy a licence?
No. Premium access starts after payment settles, and any unused trial days are added to the end of your 12-month or 36-month licence period. Buying early never shortens the time you receive.
How do Bitcoin payments work?
GreyStream creates a unique BTCPay Server invoice for your order. The invoice fixes the BTC amount for a limited time, watches the Bitcoin network and activates the licence only after settlement is verified. Do not send Bitcoin to an address from anywhere except that invoice. Card payment through a Merchant of Record is scheduled for a later phase.
Can I get a refund?
Yes - see the refund policy. There is also a trial that needs no card, which is the better way to find out whether it suits you.
Channels are slow or unresponsive the first time I open them. Is something wrong?
Very large sources may take longer to prepare the first time you open Channels while GreyStream organises their groups, countries and languages. Later visits use the saved index and should open more quickly. Nothing is deleted while this preparation runs. If the same source remains slow on later visits, tell us its approximate channel count and source type - those are the useful details.
Radio plays through the television's speakers instead of my soundbar. Why?
This happens on one sound-output setting only: Q-Symphony over HDMI/eARC. In that mode the television plays radio through its own speakers and does not pass it to the soundbar. Channels, films and series are unaffected, and so is radio from a login-based source - they go through the television's own media player, which Q-Symphony always carries. Direct MP3 and AAC stations are played by the app itself, and that is the audio the HDMI/eARC mode leaves behind. Every other setting works: Q-Symphony (Wi-Fi), Q-Symphony (Bluetooth), or picking the soundbar on its own all play radio correctly, and so do the television's speakers alone. If your radio is silent on the soundbar, switch the sound output to Q-Symphony (Wi-Fi) or Q-Symphony (Bluetooth). This is decided by the television, not by GreyStream, and nothing in the app can override it.
Some visualisers do not react to the music. Why?
Whether a station can drive the visualiser depends on how it is broadcast, not on its quality. A direct MP3 or AAC stream reacts; HLS, Ogg/Opus and the MPEG-TS streams that come from a login-based source play through the television's own player instead, and the bars stay still. Colours, scenes, artwork and lyrics all keep working either way, and the panel on the right names the reason. For the stations that do react, the television reads the stream directly from the station. Nothing passes through a GreyStream server, so there is nothing for us to store or log.
